Improving Energy Efficiency with Custom-Built, Purpose-Specific Transformers

Pacific Crest delivered a custom-built transformer solution that solved the client's problem, reduced costs, and resulted in lower line losses and higher efficiency.

The Problem
Our client designs and manufactures world class induction heating and melting equipment for various industries and applications worldwide. The transformers used for their furnaces are typically installed outdoors; sometimes hundreds of feet away from the furnace. The overall system was suffering from inefficiency due to line loss. The client thus needed:

  • A custom-built transformer that could be brought closer to the furnace
  • A way to prevent the transformer from overheating due to its proximity to the furnace

The Pacific Crest Solution
The Pacific Crest team held a detailed engineering meeting with the client to fully understand the need. We then came up with a means of providing a transformer that would allow our client to connect the transformer to a heat exchanger specifically designed to dissipate the losses generated.

The Pacific Crest design also took into account the length of cabling required for connection to the furnace. The custom-built Pacific Crest transformer was filled with a vegetable-based fluid, allowing it to be located inside the building. This reduced the cost for the low voltage cable, which resulted in lower line losses and higher efficiency.

Benefits
With the introduction of the new custom-built Pacific Crest transformer, our client was able to introduce overall efficiency in electricity usage of the furnace. They also realized significant cost benefits thanks to the savings on the low voltage cables that connected the transformer to the furnace. The shorter cables also significantly decreased line loss.
